We have been using MIM from the days of MIIS and ILM. We have implemented multiple MIM for multiple customer acquisitions and mergers for gal sync which is the most common use, we have also used MIM for process automations.
Active Directory Federation Service (ADFS) is Microsoft federation software which provides single sign on between multiple cloud-based applications, systems and other applications located across organizational boundaries. It uses a claims-based access-control authorization model to maintain application security and to implement federated identity. Claims-based authentication involves authenticating a user based on a set of claims about that user's identity contained in a trusted token. We have multiple customers with ADFS configuration as it is Microsoft’s free software to configure federation. It is recommended to keep the ADFS server inside the DMZ and we should use ADFS Proxy (WAP) in the DMZ to face the front-end ADFS request to protect ADFS servers. ADFS can interoperate with SAML based federations as Shibboleth. It is mostly used Microsoft based Single Sign On application.
We are partner with Okta and OneLogin, however we support SecureAuth and Ping Identity as well. These all are non-Microsoft federation providers which can provide Single Sign On.
Shibboleth is another federation and Single Sign On provider but it is an open source and not owned by any company. This is one of the widely used federation provider for community colleges. We have configured Shibboleth for a community college district in California. Overall, we have been using different identity & access management and single sign on solution with the different customers where we have used one or the other solution in previous or current deployments. SharePoint and SharePoint Online List, Flow, PowerApps & Development
SharePoint is a web-based collaborative platform that integrates with Microsoft Office. Launched in 2001, SharePoint is primarily sold as a document management and storage system, but the product is highly configurable and usage varies substantially among organizations. SharePoint Server is provided to organizations that seek greater control over SharePoint's behavior or design. This product is installed on customers' IT infrastructure. It receives fewer frequent updates but has access to a wider set of features and customization capabilities. There are three editions of SharePoint Server: Standard, Enterprise, and Foundation (free) which was discontinued in 2016. These servers may be provisioned as normal virtual/cloud servers or as hosted services. Latest SharePoint server is SharePoint Server 2019.

The process of upgrading to a newer version of Windows Server can vary greatly depending on which operating system you are starting with and the pathway you take.
